The birth of Shanghai Expressionism

Character (Oil on canvas, 60 x 50 cm, France, 2004)

In the second half of her stay in France, the style of Lu Schaper took another turn. She renewed her interest in topics from the golden years of Shanghai, and combined it with a much more expressionist approach, inspired by seeing dozens of works by original German expressionist masters like Marc and Macke in German museums. The resulting style was dubbed Shanghai Expressionism, and would dominate her works for many years to come, also after her move to the Netherlands end 2004. The following is a selection of her works in that style.
